Ausonia

Attractive terraces of olive groves and orchards surround the grey stone buildings of Ausonia, rising from the midst of mountains belonging to the Aurunci chain. It formed part of the monastic possessions of Montecassino, under the ancient name of “Castrum Fractae”. Only in 1862, after the Unification of Italy, did it take the name Ausonia. The town has many interesting monumental structures such as the Collegiata of St. Michel the Archangel, built on the Romanesque ruins, including a Romanesque Façade and three Gothic portals. The town's castle, donated to Montecassino in 1065 by the Princes of Capua, is both a military and residential complex. S.Maria a Castello, a stone built church, features an elegant belfry.

The Sanctuary of S. Maria del Piano, noted for its polyptych by G.B. Criscuolo, has 11th century frescoes in its crypt, which illustrate the event of St. Remicarda's miracle. But the most interesting sights of all are the cloisters, stepways, pathways and quaint small squares enclosed by fine 18th century palaces with charming mullioned windows embellished by Catalan frames. In all, the town transmits a quiet and sedate austerity.
